OCEANIUS

It started not as Oceanius, but as trrc.net -- a domain Alex registered in June 1994, before most people had heard of the web, before Internet Explorer existed, when IRC was how the internet actually talked. Alex was six years old. Network Solutions mailed him a paper invoice back then. $100 a year. The invoice went unpaid. The domain was lost. The network survived by finding a new name.

Oceanius rose from that -- given a name worthy of something much larger than itself. Servers were named after Polynesian and Easter Island deities -- ancient stone figures staring out at a vast, indifferent ocean. That felt exactly right. Along the way Alex also registered tosn.org -- the Teen Open Source Network -- a piece of early internet idealism that still exists.

The network grew through the late 90s. Then Alex met nikgod, and things got serious. In the early 2000s the infrastructure moved into nikgod's basement -- real hardware, old Sun boxes and Intel boxes stacked on baker's racks, running IRCd on Windows machines -- XP, possibly ME, which was less a stable operating system and more a cry for help. When nikgod's dad threatened to pull the plug on the server, nikgod soldered the power cord directly to the wall to make that physically impossible. This is not a metaphor. A Cox Communications cable modem served as the backbone. Several of those modems did not survive the experience. They were returned to Cox, which to their credit asked no follow-up questions.

The 2000s also brought new people. When TeenIRC shut down, some of its people found their way here -- Joey and James among them. That's not migration. That's endorsement. Around the same time, Marko -- an admin and one of the genuinely good ones -- brought an entire community of locals from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina onto the network. People from that city finding a quiet corner of the internet to just exist and talk. Maya was among them. Marko and Maya spent years on Oceanius together. They later married. That's what Oceanius actually was.

We ran #lobby as the heartbeat of the network -- the channel where you showed up first and sometimes never left. The admins had #TwilightZone -- a place to talk without an audience, make decisions, and almost certainly discuss things that would have concerned the users. What happened in #TwilightZone stayed in #TwilightZone. We ran shell accounts on those same Sun and Intel boxes -- real Unix prompts for real people -- until the internet decided to DDoS the project and test the limits of residential upstream bandwidth. The infrastructure grew up along the way -- Windows gave way to Linux. Red Hat, CentOS, Debian, FreeBSD. Some of it rented from reverse.net -- a hosting provider with a reputation for shadiness that apparently hasn't changed since. Later came TinySofa -- a hardened server distro out of Australia that most people have never heard of and fewer still ran in production. Throughout, the crew ran grsecurity hardened kernels wherever they could -- PaX memory protections, RBAC, kernel hardening patches that mainstream distros wouldn't ship for years. The kind of thing you run when you've been DDoS'd enough times to stop being casual about security. Routing got learned on Vyatta -- before Brocade bought it and the community forked it into VyOS. The Oceanius crew were early there too.

Along the way we enforced strict network rules -- including an automated bot that flagged flooding, which caught users saying "Ciao" repeatedly and banned them for it. Turns out "Ciao" is Italian for goodbye. We learned that slightly after the bans went out. The crew also discovered local privilege escalation techniques that wouldn't make security news for years. We were early. We just didn't have a CVE database yet.

On February 21, 2026, tiki.oceanius.com was decommissioned -- not because it failed, but because AI finally killed the Ashburn datacenter after all this time. The IRC daemon and services were ancient, unpatched, and absolutely living their best life -- InspIRCd and Atheme running on dogpound, a server stood up in early 2002 and somehow still breathing 24 years later -- on a network that had been running since 1994.

The network is dark. The dogpound still exists. The shells are still available. The people never left.
